The KAIROS team from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid recently organized an engaging scientific workshop for elementary school students in the 1st and 3rd grades at Teresa Berganza School in Boadilla del Monte (Madrid).
Guided by researcher Manuel Soler, the session aimed to spark curiosity and foster understanding about cloud formation, the types of clouds associated with storms, and how the KAIROS project leverages AI algorithms to improve weather prediction in support of aviation safety.
The students participated in a hands-on experiment to visualize the formation of a cloud using simple materials, making complex meteorological concepts accessible and engaging. They also had the opportunity to consolidate their learning by completing an interactive activity designed to reinforce their understanding.
This outreach initiative highlighted the crucial role of SESAR Joint Undertaking-funded research in addressing the aviation industry's challenges, particularly those linked to climate resilience. It also aimed to raise awareness about the vital contributions of environmental science and technology in mitigating climate-related risks. By dedicating the activity to communities like those in Valencia, recently impacted by a DANA (Isolated High-Altitude Depression), the event emphasized the importance of preparing future generations with the knowledge needed to reduce the effects of such events.
The UC3M team extends its gratitude to Teresa Berganza School for hosting this event and providing a platform to inspire young minds with cutting-edge science.
