An Innovative AI Approach to Forecasting Volcanic SO₂ Plumes, Sandstorms and Ice Clouds

The KAIROS project was represented at the 2025 EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference in Lyon, France. Hugues Brenot, atmospheric scientist from the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (BIRA-IASB), presented the project's developments on an AI-powered approach to forecasting airborne hazards that pose significant risks to aviation, with the presentation titled "An innovative approach to forecasting the transport of SO₂-rich volcanic plumes, sandstorms, and ice clouds using the KAIROS AI-digital solution for aviation"

The conference, jointly organised by EUMETSAT and Météo-France under the theme "From Space to Safety: Earth Observation for Future Weather and Climate Preparedness", provided an ideal platform to demonstrate how artificial intelligence and satellite observations are transforming operational meteorology.
